Theatre time
Music Hall produces a family series that animates quality children's books into stage productions like:
StellaLuna
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Goodnight Moon
The Ugly Ducking
Eric Carle's Treasured Stories
For the “Grow Up Great Program”, Music Hall teachers read the story in class using study guides in the weeks before a scheduled stage show. The Dramatic Play Center's located in the Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms of select Detroit Public Elementary Schools are furnished with the props necessary for the children to use at play and really understand the content of each story. And finally, the children will learn important social skills by attending the live stage show; and, after the stage show the children would continue to use the dramatic play center materials. In addition, the teachers will be trained at the beginning of the year in the general theater time education process; and, as each children’s show approaches, new material related to the children’s show will be provided. The family will be involved by being invited to attend the class sessions and to bring their children to the stage show. Also, the Theater Time educator will prepare lesson plans for a series of theater workshops based on the semester’s stage show (i.e. The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and he/ she and the teacher will conduct exciting workshops on learning to perform the different roles in the children’s story/show and other aspects of the story. In addition, the parents will be given information to reinforce the material at home.
Music Time
Hayes Greenfield will potentially adapt his interactive program of instrument and music awareness to the Detroit Public Schools unique situation. Then Mr. Greenfield will come and train the teachers to deliver this program for the students. The new Music Play Center will be furnished with the instruments (miniature and handmade instruments) that will motivate the students to make music. The family will be involved through the making and playing of the handmade instruments at home. Music Hall provides experienced educators, proven materials to support the local teacher training and related play center materials. Specifically, for the Dramatic Play Center and the Music Play Center, Music Hall educators provide teacher and PNC volunteer training for using the centers and their low cost props – i.e. handmade instruments and low cost costume elements. Teachers are supported by our educators through training, study guides, in class sessions and family take home information. Teachers are connected to each other because they will take training together, are in the same facility for collegial counseling and through direct link to Music Hall’s educators and program directors – plus there are facilitated discussions in teacher development sessions.
